Pioneering research highlights issues facing trans & non-binary survivors of domestic abuse

Loving Me, who operate the UK’s first domestic abuse refuge by & for the trans & non-binary community in the UK, have published research into their pioneering work with trans+ survivors.

This research lays out the stark reality of the issues faced by this tiny, extensively marginalised & frequently overlooked group. Key themes include the prevalence of familial abuse & identity based abuse – (a type of abuse not formally recognised in the UK).

It as well shows as how, contrary to widespread media demonisation of trans+ people, 98.2% of perpetrators against trans+ people were cisgender.

The research paints a picture of a group with frequently complex, intersecting needs who face an increasing struggle to access help as the EHRC’s statutory code comes into effect, a situation that renders support for trans+ survivors harder than ever to access.

The message is clear; we need the government & local commissioners to urgently recognise the needs of trans+ survivors & act to ensure they have support in place when they need it
